Round 16 - 31 August 2024
Round 16 and the season is quickly drawing to a close, with some teams having played their last game this weekend due to byes next week.
U6 Ninja’s
In the penultimate game of the season the Ninjas pushed through the rain to rain goals against Capel. With a miraculous long range goal from Vinnie the crowd was cheering loudly. For a lot of these kids it has been the first season of soccer and to watch their skills and confidence improve has been amazing. Under the watchful eye of Coach Matt and Brit all the kids thoroughly enjoyed the lolly at the end.
U8 Rovers
It was a great day for soccer with the Rovers travelling to Vasse to take on the Dugites. The boys started the game off on fire putting the pressure on the opposition from the first whistle. Defence was strong rarely letting the ball into the Dugites half. Theo and Jimmy were strong in the forward line working well together to set up Jimmy for the first goal of the game and his first for the season!! The Rovers continued to show how far they’ve come this season with some great teamwork and passing to space.
The second half continued much the way of the first with the boys determined to stop the Dugites from getting on the board and focused on creating more scoring shots. This led to Jimmy and Sailor both finding the back of the net after some great teamwork.
PODs went to Theo who put on a clinic with his impressive speed and footwork. Jimmy for his 2 goals and his solid work defending to keep the ball in our half and Toby who every week is solid in whatever position he plays and chases down every ball with determination. With thanks to LJ soccer and Amaze’n.
U8 Legends XI
Legends 11 took on Capel Wolves Black. A terrific performance by the team against tough competition. The game was level 3-3 until the last 30 seconds when Knox scored another brilliant goal to make it 2 for the game with Jangchub and Makai scoring the other goals. Great communication across the entire team played in good spirit. POD went to Delasi, Makai and Knox.
U9 Strikers
Penultimate game of the season in rainy windy conditions.
Arlo G kicked plenty of goals, while Miles and Jahla did a great job of defending them. It was a super close game with loads of great passing and teamwork. Genevive and Josh were on fire working hard the whole match. Josh scored player of the day along with Miles. Thanks to A Mazen and Pies and Ale for your support.
U9 Wasps
For the second last game of the season, the Wasps faced Vasse Adders. They played a great match using all their skills. Although it got a bit rough, they stayed strong. With the players of the day going to our two amazing goalies. Both Emily and Mille put in an amazing effort. Well done
U9 Dragons
The end of the season is approaching fast, but the FMR Dragons are keeping the momentum going all the way through. This weekend we met the Capel Cubs, in what was a fast paced and nail biting match.
The Dragons came out strong in the first half, with lots of quick runs down the line and shots on goal. Many of these were deftly met by the Cub’s keeper and made for a great challenge for the Dragons.
The oranges at half time clearly rejuvenated the Dragons and they were back on the field with a renewed spring in their step for the second half. The closing half proved to be more fruitful for the Dragons, with some very impressive footwork on display and the team were able to hit the back of the net several times. Focus on finding space and keeping their position on the pitch has been advantageous for the Dragons and their game has consistently improved throughout the season.
Our players of the day this week with thanks to Two Cracks Coffee were Leighton and John, who have both been absolute powerhouses in our team all season.
U9 Grizzlies
The weather held out as the U9 FMR Grizzlies took on the Dunsborough Fire over the weekend. This was such an amazing game to watch as this little team has come so far this season and really play so well together as a team, a credit to their amazing coach, Sam. In defence, Zephyr, Tyler and Archer made sure very little got through their defensive line whilst anything that did get through, was quickly pounced on by goalies Osiris and Elsie. Up the other end of the field, Amelie, Hugo and Dylan found each other and passed the ball beautifully to put continual pressure on the opposition’s goal. A massive shout out to our Player of the Day, Tyler for having an absolute ripper match and scoring his first goal!! Also, a special Happy Father’s Day and thanks this week to all the amazing Dad’s and Grandad’s in our team who coach, ref, set up the field, kick the ball with us and drive us every week to games. We see you and appreciate everything you do for us.
U10 Storm
The Dunsborough Tigers had a close game against our U10 Storm; they made good use of the entire pitch. Great team work, great triangles, great touch and pass with the ball. The second half was particularly fine football from Storm. So much so, we have several PODs this week. Congratulations to Ethan T, Matt N, Zephyr T and Kynan T from Squid Lips and Burger Baby.
U10 River Squad
Margaret River River Squad played last Saturday in Vasse against the Vasse Vipers and it was a great game. Both teams played really well and even with one player down for the River Squad we won 4 - 3. Luca scored 2 goals and Weston and Ollie 1 goal each.
Both teams tried several times to scored more goals but unfortunately they couldn’t finished off with more goals. By the end of this exciting match River Squad got the best result!
Well done to our players and coach Clarel. It was noticeable to see on this game how much our team have been improving. Players of the day from went to Declan and Dylan.
U11 Breakers
The first half of the match proved to be a super close game. Felix dominated the goal square backed up by a wall of defenders. Isaac ran the length of the field to maintain possession with no subs for relief. The second half of the game saw the Brumbies take the lead as their subs advantage proved critical for the end game. PODs went to Felix and Isaac.
U11 Stars
The last game of the season for the U11 Stars due to a bye next week.
A great game to end on, playing against the FMR Jettz. A tough game, but one with lots of action and drama.
Great teamwork and determination from the players with Oscar Atkins winning player of the day for his continued focus and speed on the ball. He scored a cracker of a goal which was well earned.
Great to reflect at the end of the game on how much progress the team have made. So much improvement from every player. They all should be very proud.
U12 Wyverns
Another win for the Wyverns today 3-2 against Busselton Bullets! This team of fighters started the season with many of the team playing soccer for the first time. They were slaughtered in their first game of the season 20+ to 0, but that didn’t deter them!!! Coach Gary has shown great commitment to the team, offering two training sessions a week in the second half of the season. The kids listening well and training hard, have learnt so much and developed their individual skills and team player attitudes to reach cup finals last week! Today was a muddy one! We had great defence with goalie Benji deflecting many-a potential goal. Tommi showed us some nifty footwork getting around the ankles of the bullets and winning player of the match. Ryal also received recognition as second player of the match! Michael’s hat trick of goals got us over the line today with an excellent assist from Nigel. Of course, it’s a whole team effort every time bringing the ball up from defence, through the midfield and into the net! Well done everyone!!!
U13 Rockets
The Vasse Tigers hosted the Margaret River Rockets under a grey sky and cool wind. The boys were pumped and banter of who could score the most goals was thrown around. Not long after the starting whistle Hayden was fouled in the box and a penalty shot awarded. He unselfishly gave the shot to Dom who chipped it into the top right corner of the net. Not even the lengthy stature of the Tigers goalie could block that one. From here on in the Rockets were showing off what training twice a week does with some great passing and assists, converting to goals. Coach Jason looked chuffed from the sidelines knowing the boys do sometimes listen at training. It was a goal bonanza for the Rockets with Dom, Charlie, Griffin, Darcy, Laec, Kalani, Hayden, Riley, all scoring 1 or more goals each. A special mention to the Tigers goalkeeper who blocked way more balls than he let through.
The Rockets finished the morning with a team building day at Primal Archery Park in Vasse, playing war games with Coach Jason keeping the inner child alive in him.
Player of the day was Dom. Thanks to A Maze'n Margaret River for sponsoring POTD.
U14 Tigers
It was a grey day at MR for the U14 match against the Lions.
Both teams very evenly matched. Lions started well with most of the ball in the first 10 minutes. Lions score the first goal from great cross and one touch strike. Tigers took up the challenge in the next 10 minutes with lots of attacking play. Chloe taking plenty of shots without success. A foul in the box allows Chloe to equalize from the spot. Another attack by the Tigers - Chloe pass and a great goal on the run from Buster. Tough defensive game for the rest of the half. Excellent work from Jacob, Charlie, Mia and Piper at the back.
Emily running everywhere in the middle. Great team play from the Tigers. Lions defense also excellent with Brice the goalie working hard to keep the Tigers out.
Change of Goalie for the Tigers with Hunter pulling on the gloves. Levi having a run in the middle. A real arm wrestle for the final 10 minutes. Plenty of attacks from both sides. Chloe puts in a great cross unfortunately for the Lions results in an own goal.
Tigers 3 - Lions 1. Lions continue to attack. Hunter in goals making some excellent saves with Charlie and Jacob clearing up. Mia and Piper impenetrable in defense. Jahli, Buster, Levi and Arie keeping the midfield moving. Last 10 minutes very even with solid defence from both teams.
A tough, even and fair game. Great team effort from the Tigers to hold for 3-1 win. Mia and Piper fabulous in defense and worthy recipients of the Players of the match awards.
U15 The Blaze
With no subs, the Blaze took on Cornerstone at home in an even and hard fought contest. Lisa had a cracker of a game, and scored the first goal from a great pass up from the back, and a perfect pass across from Ethan.
Stirling, Ethan and Oliver Lawrey had attempts, but were thwarted by the Cornerstone keeper.
The second half continued much the same way. Stirling, Charlotte and William were working hard in defense to keep the ball in our forward half. Scarlett, Ollie Milward, Poom and Charlie chasing down the ball and keeping it forward. Then a handball in the box gave Stirling a penalty, which went through.
Oliver Lawrey had a free and clear run, but the keepers glove diverted the ball out. Charlie and Lisa both had shots that were also saved by the keeper
Jarrah was also busy up our defensive end, saving a great Cornerstone chance off a corner. Then Cornerstone were awarded a penalty and scored, bringing it back to a 2-1 lead to us.
Then a brilliant Poom and Ethan combo gave us another. Shortly followed by a Stirling pass up, Scarlett won the ball, crossed over the goals to Ethan who scored again to leave the score at 4-1 to us at the end of the game.
Everyone played well today, showing great heart to keep momentum going our way, with some excellent calling, teamwork and passing on display. Well done Blaze!
YL Wanderers
Margaret River hosted Cornerstone on Saturday in what amounted to a torrid nil all draw. With Lucas in goals and Henry on the pitch, it was a bit of a new look for Margaret River and it worked well with Lucas being vocal in orchestrating the backline, whilst his long kicks served the team well.
Both teams took turns at dominating the game throughout the day, but it wasn't till the thirty three minute mark of the second half that Ryder struck the first legitimate chance at goal, with a brilliant strike narrowly missing. Cornerstone had a chance from a free kick late in the game, but Cohen was brilliant in defence and managed a great smother after the first touch which quickly ended any hope of a goal.
Plenty of good players on the day for Margaret River, with Players of the day going to Jacob and Ryder. Jacob has had a wonderful season and always makes an immediate impact once on the pitch. Ryder played a great game as an attacking mid and his work rate was tireless. Honourable mentions to Finn, Zane, Caspian, Cohen and Lucas. Great game boys and always nice to come away with a point.
