Round 4 - 11 May 2024

Round 4 saw us blessed with more sunshine after a wet and wild Friday.  It’s so good to see so many kids in the region getting out there and loving soccer!  Our teams are gelling together to get some good results, and most of all, it’s great to see so many happy faces enjoying the game.

U6 Ninja’s

Amidst the remnants of a week's rain, Saturday's fixture pitted the Ninjas against the Dunsborough Team. Despite Leo's absence, anticipation for the clash was palpable.

With the teams splitting for two intense halves, Evie's halftime emergence, despite battling illness, rallied her teammates, earning her the accolade of play of the day. Marshall, under Coach Matt's tutelage, showcased impeccable execution, securing the second spot with his growing confidence.

As the match concluded, team camaraderie shone during the post-game huddle, with Luke highlighting Lucas's stellar performance. Excitement mounts for the upcoming derby against Margaret River—an unmissable spectacle on the horizon!

U6 Warriors

The sun was shining on our home turf as the U6 Warriors took on the Busselton City Wildcats. The Wildcats came out strong and didn’t make it easy but the Warriors had some great defensive play that helped to protect our goal.

The Warriors displayed some amazing passages of play with some great passes and team work to move the ball down the pitch towards the net but the Wildcats made us work hard for every goal scored. It was a tough game but the Warriors stepped up to the challenge and still came away smiling.

A huge congratulations to our ‘Players of the Day’, Archer and Clayton for both having awesome games and runs with the ball. A big Happy Birthday to Owen who played on his birthday.

A shout out to the Busselton Wildcats for making the journey down; sponsor Squidlips, for the player of the day awards and of course to all the coaches and volunteers who make the games happen each and every week.

U7 The Messi Kids

A perfect day in Margaret River as the Messi Kids took on the Dunsborough Stars. Both games were closely contested with some great defence, passing and shots on goal.

The Messi Kids continue to gain confidence and hone their skills as a team. The improvement is evident as the weeks go by.

Darcy and Eliza were the stand out players for their teams and each were grateful to receive a voucher from Burger Baby.

U8 Raptors

Today the U8 Raptors played the GMAS Hurricanes on a beautiful sunny day in Margs.  The teams were closely matched with possession moving back and forth throughout the game and Raptors giving it their all with fantastic teamwork.

In the first half, Torin and Cooper provided strong defense which led to Bodhi in midfield creating an epic setup for Louis to strike a goal.  This was followed by a great save by Arlo in goal.

Coe played a blinder in midfield with constant speedy running and winning of possession and a great setup for Louis’ second goal of the game.  In the second half, Cohen worked hard in defense, Nate worked his magic in midfield and Arlo provided some great crosses on goal.

Players of the day were Louis for brilliant striking and Cohen for amazing defense and for both staying in their positions so well throughout the game.  Thanks to Amaze’n Margaret River for the crazy golf vouchers.

U8 Rovers

U8 Rovers took on the Dunsborough Dragons in perfect conditions today. They once again started off strong showing the competition they’re a force to be reckoned with all over the pitch.

Our defence stood strong only allowing one shot on goal from the Dragons in the first half which was easily stopped by our goalie Toby.

There was some superb passing and game play from all the boys showing off how well they work as a team.

The second half started with an awesome long range goal from the ever reliable Ari and Rio stood strong in goals towards the end of the half when the Dragons started to push forward.

Players of the Day went to Sailor who once again was dominant in defence clearing the ball effortlessly and backing up his team and Theo who the last few weeks has put on a masterclass in the forward line and continued today with some amazing footwork resulting in a couple of goals. With thanks to Pies and Ale

U9 Strikers

M.R Strikers vs M.R Serpents

A delight to watch on this fine Autumn day. Allthough the Strikers scored a few more goals, the newly formed Serpents had some promising runs, great defence and a well celebrated goal. The Strikers had some awesome goal persistence by Josh and Arlo G, a great run by Arlo D and non stop commitment and effort by Jake which scored him player of the day. The whole team have really come together! Thanks to Witchy Pies for their voucher and support.

U9 Dragons

The sun was shining this Saturday as Dragons played away, taking on the Vasse Taipans. The match turned out to be the toughest challenge the team have faced so far this season, and they did their best to tackle it head on (pun intended).

From the first whistle, it was a neck and neck competition. Both teams were hungry for the ball, and each had a tough time holding on to possession for long. In previous games, the Dragons’ strikers have found the back of the net with ease, but today they really had to work for it. It was also a time for our defence to really shine and show what they’ve got to keep the Taipans at bay. Persistence and resilience were key descriptors of the match, with it ending with all players exhausted from a hard fought competition. The Dragons will regroup and be rearing to go again next weekend!

Players of the day today were Timmy, who scored his first goal for the Dragons - and what a spectacular goal it was! Our second player of the day was Fred, who made his debut in the team and we are so happy to welcome him into the Dragons family! Thanks to Witchy Pies and Squid Lips Margaret River for the generous vouchers.

U9 Grizzlies

Under 9 FMR Grizzlies vs FMR Wasps

The day of the big Under 9 FMR derby was here and it did not disappoint. Team Grizzlies were so excited leading up to the game to play against some of their friends on their home turf. It was an action packed game with lots of highlights and impressive plays from both teams.

The Grizzlies defensive wall, consisting of Zephyr and Tyler with goalies, Elsie and Osiris, was absolutely rock solid this week, not letting anything past them. The Grizzlies midfielders Boston, Archer and Amelie were formidable together, moving the ball down field beautifully to set-up for the strikers. It was awesome to watch them put it all together and support each other. Our strikers, Dylan and Hugo were on fire, finding the back of the net on multiple occasions with Amelie and Archer also so close to also capitalising.

This game was truly a team effort, with everyone putting in the work to get the result. A special mention to Player's of the Day, Amelie and Boston for both working hard throughout the game. A shout out to the FMR Wasps for an awesome match; to the match sponsors, Candy Cow and Witchie Pies, for the player of the day awards and of course to all the coaches and volunteers who make the games happen each and every week.

U10 Roos

The Roos travelled to Dunsborough for our earliest kickoff to date and whilst it took a little while for our players to switch on, once they did we were away! Again seeing some magical teamwork moments in passing and getting the ball successfully from deep in defence to score goals and another week with multiple goal scorers.

Our player of the day with thanks to Witchy Pies was Noah Hull, for giving his all the entire time he was on the pitch and listening to the coach, putting advice into practice. Well done Noah!

U10 Storm

The whole team was all smiles on the pitch this week running around on a perfect autumn sunny morning.

The team showed great improvement in man marking, touches, and passing. Especially in the second half. Still room for improvement but they are working hard and it’s showing on the field.

There were some great goals and some even greater saves by our two goalies of the day.

The POD went to Lachlan Wills for great work ethic annd all round team play. He was awarded a Witchy Pies voucher for his efforts.

U11 Breakers

U11 Breakers Vs GMAS

Using space to their advantage the Margaret River team were passing swiftly and accurately culminating with Oscar’s goal for POD. The GMAS strikers were stopped in their tracks by Zoe’s determined tackles and Drake’s goalkeeping prowess. Second half saw the breakers finding the back of the net as Isaac scored earning POD. Thanks to Burger Baby and Candy Cow for prizes.

U11 Stars

A lively game for the U11 Stars against the BCFC Lightning at Churchill Park.   Lots of great passing and teamwork led to the win for the Stars this week.

Some great team goals by Olive, Oscar, Freddy and Luke, who grabbed a hat trick. Great defending this week kept the score in the Stars' favour.

Taj Cawse was the standout player this week for his running, defending and sportsmanship.

U11 Jettz

Playing at Vasse home ground, didn’t deter the Jettz . After pre game  encouragement, working hard, playing together and not stopping  will get you a victory.

They clicked.  It paid off.

The girls rallied together to support each other.

Kayla’s defensive tactics, and clearing the field kicks were what we needed.

Millie didn’t stop running, in midfield with fierce tackling.

Thanks to Pies and Ale and the Fudge Factory.

U12 Legends

This week the Legends played away and although the goals did not stack in our favour, the game play was extremely fair and competitive.

Our defense played well against a strong offensive line.  Our Beau in goals showed confidence and growth in his skills and achieved dual player of the day.  Our other recipient was Andi, who applied great pressure on our opponents and forced many misdirect shots at goal.

As a team, we showed sportsmanship and gratitude by encouraging each other and supporting one another, good and bad.

Thanks goes out to Margaret River Fudge Factory and Candy Cow in Cowaramup for support of our up and coming.

U12 Wyverns

The Wyverns and their fans were thrilled to score their first goal of the season against Dunsborough. Coach Gary asked the boys to “show me you have confidence on the ball” and they did this with pride. This meant don’t kick it first time, put your foot on the ball first and control it! The reward was 2 great goals by Nigel and Tommy.

The team showed great skill with many effective headers in defence and attack. From defence, with our goal keepers protecting their space, through to the midfield and the back of the net, things are looking optimistic for the Wyverns season.

Congratulations to our players of the day. Ben in goals – a really great effort and Nigel for playing for the team, keeping your head up and being flexible.

The true highlights for all were Nigels celebratory gymnastics and coach Gary singing the Margaret River Song. We are the River, the mighty River….

U13 Rockets

Straight off the bat The Rockets came in hard, with Darcy covering plenty of ground whilst also displaying positional awarness. Hayden nabbed the first goal, a nice high lob that hit the back of the net with some power, this was just the beginning of the ‘festival of goals’ to come.

Kalani was second off the ranks popping a nice one into the goals. In the defensive line Miles was was reliable and in control as always. Laec was a defensive brick wall  and used his height for a few speccy headers. Oli was also down there playing his role well and providing plenty of solid defensive work.

Monty set up some nice plays selling the odd dummy to his opponents and getting accurate passes across to Dom who was always relentless in his approach. Riley got in some decent touches and went for a massive power shot which just hit the crossbar.

The Rockets domination continued into the second half. Griffo provided his team mates with some handy centering passes always remaining cool, calm and collected under pressure and also scoring a goal.

Old twinkle toes Albs was in there dancing his way through the middle of the pitch (thanks Mike for that line). Cody proved himself to be a strong team player and ran hard throughout the game.

Hugh had a shot at goal and displayed some accurate passes to his team mates. Dom went on with his goal spree with two more in the bank racking up his mums goal bill, apparently it’s a pineapple a goal. Yeah Dom, lolly snakes on you!

Charlie was obviously pretty quiet down in goals and probably could have hosted his own tea party whilst getting the job done. A dominant 10-2 victory to the Rockets! Well done players of the day Kalani and Miles and to sponsors Squid Lips. Thanks coach and all parent helpers.

U13 Warriors

The FMR Warriors came up against the Cornerstone Chooks this week. Though the Chooks came out in front, it was a hard-fought game. The Warriors defensive pressure made it difficult for the Chook's ace ball carriers and strikers to break through and score. Max, the Warriors player of the day, did an impressive job, saving shots on goal in 1v1 situations. Sophia is always steady and reliable in her favourite centre-back position; Anouk is increasingly confident in right back, bringing physicality and putting pressure on attackers. Alex brings her speed and agility and runs tirelessly every game. Savana played a great match, getting multiple chances at goals and working as a centre-defensive-mid.  Our new season players are discovering their skills and finding their place on the pitch while having fun doing it. Together, the team continues to improve this season, developing their ball skills and understanding strategies and how to implement their game plan.

U14 Tigers

BCFC Lions coming down to Margaret River for a 12 noon kick off  turned into a gripping game. An even first half with a missed penalty and some good opportunities from both teams to get ahead. When the whistle went at half time it was 0-0 with some tired legs on both sides. The second half opened up for both teams in the middle of the pitch. Play was quickly up and down the pitch with both teams stopping the ball short of the nets with strong defense. Lions Number 9 Elise Cooper scored with 10 minutes remaining putting the BCFC lions up by 1 goal to 0. The Tigers spent the final 10 minutes pressuring the Lions defense but to no avail. A very nail biting game for both teams supporters. Final score 1-0 win for BCFC Lions. Man of the match for Tigers went to Arie for a massive effort on the right wing.

U14 Sharks

In U14s Sharks vs Vasse Cobras the score board was inaugurated by two fabulous goals from Felix Gibbs and Benji Willing who defeated the opponent tight defence line and their brilliant goal keeper. Cobras didn’t give up and put on a fight scoring two goals by the end of the first half. Unfortunately for the host team, it was the Margaret River Sharks that dominated the second half pushing forward from the mid-field and the wings with Kai Hillier and Ziggy Denham creating space for the brilliant goals from Kelany Taylor, Benji Willing and Rainer De Vries. Vasse Cobras counter-attack but found Reid Kemp saving Sharks goal with mastery. The end result summed 9 goals to Sharks and 2 for Vasse Cobras. The Player of the Day was taken by Reid Kemp! Thank you Vasse Cobras for the fair game and good sport and to Burger Baby for another voucher!

U15 The Blaze

The Blaze met the Cornerstone Crumpets in a very evenly matched game. Both teams keepers and defence were kept busy by the forward attempts of each team.  Crumpets were piling on the pressure making our shots go wide, and the ones that were on target were saved by the keeper.

Crumpets finally opened the score with 12 mins to go in the first half.  Stirling tried to even the score but his attempt was saved by the keeper.  We had a chance on a corner but couldn’t convert.  William was thwarting attacking efforts and Lisa was working hard in the middle making a good team to get the ball forward.  Ethan was unlucky not to score.

Crumpets scored again just after half time.  A lovely shot by Lisa was saved, but we got the rebound and Stirling finally broke through to get us on the board.  A William chip to Lisa, to Charlie, to Stirling got our second goal to even the score.  A lot more back and forth before Archie got it up, cross to Stirling, who passed to Jay who scored to give us the lead!

Scarlett was working hard in the middle to move the ball, and Asha keeping the ball in down the line. Jarrah had a couple of shots that went over.  Poom shot saved.  Jarrah shot saved. Crumpets weren’t making it easy for us.

Charlie was having a great game covering ground, and Oliver L making some good saves a keeper and doing long bombs up the pitch.  Archie long shot blocked by Crumpets defence. Danger came as our defence was caught off guard, but the ball hit the post. Rebound saved by Oliver L in goals.  Another Jarrah shot but a great save by Crumpets keeper.  Crumpets didn’t give up and it was a nail biter right to the end, but the final whistle blew with us narrowly in the lead.

POD went to Lisa who had a great game.  Thanks to Witchy Pies.

YL Wanderers

Margaret River Wanderers hosted Busselton Redbacks on a glorious Saturday afternoon looking for a little redemption after going down 3 to 1 when they first met at the beginning of the season.

Busselton began strongly, dictating the pace of the game for the first twenty minutes which resulted in the first goal  thirteen minutes in and a couple of near misses due to unforced errors on Margaret River's behalf. To the Wanderer's credit they settled down well and began to dominate possession with Fynn , Taj and Zane beginning to have a major influence on the game. With this possession style of play many chances were created and it was only a matter of time before Margaret River equalised and it came thirty five minutes in, with Ryder scoring a cracking goal to get the fans roaring. Margaret River continued to dominate the first half and despite a few near misses were unable to convert, but headed into the break knowing that they could match it with the Redbacks.

Busselton came out all guns blazing in the second half with Henry making a great save for the Wanderers only a minute in. Unfortunately for Margaret River, only a minute later Busselton found the back of the net from a corner and regained the lead. This seemed to light a fire in the Wanderers belly and every single player stepped up, taking responsibility for their role on the pitch and began to dominate possession again and put pressure back onto the Redbacks. Eventually Cohen was fouled inside the box with Ryder converting to equalise the score. This resulted in an intense final 15 minutes with neither team giving an inch. The Wanderers managed to keep their cool and certainly had their chances with a couple more free kicks and corners that could well have resulted in goals. Busselton too broke through our defence with only a minute on the clock and looked likely to get a shot away, only to be once again thwarted by an incredible run from Noah who was amazing in defence for Margaret River all day.

Two all was a fitting result for a magnificent game of football with Zane winning player of the day for his incredibly strong performance on the wing, never once backing down from a contest. Awesome game Zane. Special mention to Fynn and Noah too who were both incredible all game. Overall though, it was the strength of the team performance that made this game so special.

In summary the  Wanderers have their first point for the season, but more importantly it was wonderful to see how happy every single player was after the game, knowing that you had all played your hearts out and left nothing on the pitch. Congratulations to coaches Adrian and Simon too, with your belief in the players and style of play you are implementing showing on the scoreboard, but more importantly, showing on the players faces.
